The phrase “they don’t make them like they used to” is often said, but at times, carries more weight.

To the east of County Cheshire in England you will find the town of Crewe, a small railway town with a population of a little more than 55,000 people. Set in the beautiful British countryside, the streets are paved in cobbles and lined with terrace houses which in a strange way evoke an almost wartime feel. If you didn’t know, it could be just another cutesy British town... but it’s not.

Since 1946 Crewe has been the home to Bentley Motors.

The Headquarters and design & manufacturing site is situated on Pyms Lane on the outskirts of the town. It employs over 3,500 people, most of which live in Crewe or the surrounding area. There are generations of family members that work together at this site, nearly all of them having a skillset that has been passed down through the timeline of Bentley motorcars being hand built here for nearly eight decades.

Bentley pride themselves of making some of the worlds most luxurious and prestigious motorcars and have always believed that to achieve such a level of quality, these motorcars must be hand built by the most skilled engineers and craftspeople who similarly take pride in every detail of their work.

For nearly eighty years this “hand built” principle has been what has set Bentley apart from most of its global competition, but sadly times are changing and in what is very quickly becoming an autonomous age, there is little room for tradition.

As such, production techniques have had to adapt and evolve over the last ten years and whilst there is still a great deal of craftmanship in the assembly of much of today’s Bentley motorcars, you could say that the last truly hand built Bentley was the Mulsanne which was produced between 2010-2020.

The car takes its name from the Mulsanne straight, a section of what is arguably the most famous race circuit in the world “Le Sarthe”, home to the Le Mans 24 Hours; a place in which Bentley has deep roots, seeing no less than five victories since 1924, firmly cementing the legacy of “The Bentley Boys”.

The Mulsanne, with its understated elegance, represented the pinnacle of Bentley craftsmanship and contemporary design, offering the most refined automotive interiors in the world, with the finest hides and most exquisite veneers used throughout the cabin. Front and rear seats, door trim, armrests and switches were designed as a contemporary take on classic Bentley design.  Hand-finished, unbleached and book-matched wood veneers form pure, elegant surfaces throughout the cabin. Deep pile, flat-cut carpets were handcrafted specifically for each Mulsanne. This is a motorcar to be driven in.

There was simply no compromise with the Mulsanne. You might say it’s a love letter to an automotive era and a farewell to a time where building motor cars was just a bit more special.
