2017 Porsche 991.2 Carrera PDK
Information
Since its debut in 1964, the 911 has walked a delicate line between tradition and innovation, evolving incrementally while preserving the unmistakable character that defines it.
The original 911 emerged as a successor to the Porsche 356, introducing a rear-engine layout paired with an air-cooled flat-six engine. Early models established key traits that would become synonymous with the car, compact dimensions, the distinctive silhouette and flat six exhaust note.
Through the 1970s and 1980s the 911 matured. Turbocharging arrived marking the beginning of forced induction in the lineup. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, refinements in suspension, aerodynamics, and electronics helped tame the car’s famously tricky handling characteristics.
A major turning point came in 1998 with the transition from air-cooled to water-cooled engines in the 996 generation. While controversial among purists, this shift allowed Porsche to meet modern emissions and performance demands. Subsequent generations, the 997 and then the 991 continued to refine the formula, blending increasing levels of comfort, usability, and technology with the raw driving appeal expected of a 911.
In 2011 Porsche unveiled the 991 generation which marked one of the most significant redesigns in the model’s history. Built on an all-new platform, it featured a longer wheelbase, wider track, and extensive use of aluminium construction to reduce weight. The result was a more stable, more refined car that still retained the agility of its predecessors.
The 991.2 emerged in 2016 as a mid-cycle update and whilst the changes appeared subtle on the surface, the 991.2 represents one of the most consequential changes in the 911’s history with universal adoption of turbocharging across the Carrera range.
Historically Carreras relied on naturally aspirated engines, the 991.2 introduced a 3.0 litre twin-turbocharged flat-six. This engine delivered not only increased power but more importantly, significantly improved torque across the rev range. The result was a car that felt faster and more responsive in real-world driving conditions.
The 991.2 Carrera occupies a unique position in the 911 timeline. It marks the end of an era for naturally aspirated base Carreras and the beginning of a fully turbocharged future. For some enthusiasts, this transition represents a departure from tradition and for others, it’s a logical step in the model’s ongoing evolution.
The Porsche 991.2 Carrera is not a radical reinvention but it is a significant evolution. It demonstrates Porsche’s ability to adapt without losing sight of what makes the 911 special. In a lineage defined by careful progression rather than abrupt change the 991.2 stands as a milestone, a car that redefines expectations while remaining unmistakably a 911.
