2019 Bentley Continental GT W12 First Edition
Information

In 2002 Bentley Motors unveiled a car that would be the start of a new era.

A car that would open up their brand to a much wider audience and change the perception of Bentley ownership. It would still have all the character, luxury and quality you come to expect from a Bentley, but for the first time in a Sports Coupe.

This is the Bentley Continental GT.

Not long ago It celebrated twenty years of production which is testament to its success throughout all three generations of production.

The GT was launched in 2002 with an all new twelve-cylinder powerplant developed in partnership with Bentley’s then-new parent company VW.  It’s unique W-configuration means that the engine is 24 percent shorter than an equivalent V12, benefitting packaging and maximising usable cabin space. This twin turbocharged titan produced a thumping 552bhp and 650nm of torque and by using high-pressure direct fuel injection, with low-pressure port injection, it could maximise refinement whilst optimising power and torque delivery… In short, 0-60 in 4.8 seconds with no compromise on comfort!

This engine has gone on to become an automotive icon and, since its first introduction, the engineering team in Crewe have continually improved the performance of the engine by means of power, torque, emissions and refinement. Over the last 20 years power has increased by 37 percent and torque by 54 percent, while emissions have been reduced by 25 percent.

Each W12 engine is hand-built over 6.5 hours by a team of craftspeople before undertaking a highly sophisticated test regime of over an hour via three specialist diagnostic machines. Every week, one engine is run over an extended test cycle and then fully stripped for inspection which greatly improves the reliability of these engines.

Twenty years on and we are in a new era, where automotive manufacturers are having to adapt to the existential impacts of climate change. Sadly, this makes the likes of Bentley’s 6.0 Litre Twin Turbo charged W12 powerhouse somewhat redundant and as such, after an incredible production run spanning two decades and over 105,000 units built, the W12 has been retired.

The Continental GT was built around the W12 engine. They were unveiled together and as such have almost become synonymous. When an engine and chassis are joined at the factory for the first time they call this “the marriage” and I think that’s quite symbolic of the partnership between the W12 and the GT.

The name itself is an expression of what it does best, comfortably cruising across the continent. And this is why twenty years on its still best in class.
