2019 Ferrari Portofino
Information
When Ferrari unveiled their replacement to the hugely successful California T in 2018 it was no surprise that its name would be reflective of the picturesque and glamourous location you would like to see yourself driving it, much like its predecessor although in this instance “Portofino” the iconic fishing village located on the Italian Riviera.
The Portofino is a front mounted V8 2+2 hard top convertible but make no mistake this is not just a facelifted and rebadged California, instead this car has been redesigned from the ground up sitting on a totally new chassis. The Portofino is 80kg lighter than the California and is more powerful, now with a heavily revised version of the 3.9L Twin-Turbo V8 producing 592BHP (an impressive 39BHP hike over its predecessor). This combination of weight reduction and added power will launch the Portofino from a standing 0 to 62mph in just 3.5 seconds topping out just short of 200mph. The retractable hardtop can be raised or lowered up to 30mph and takes just 14 seconds to complete a cycle.
Ferrari claim that this is their most usable model produced to date for a number of reasons: Firstly, the ride is so refined and compliant, bettered further still by the optional Magneride Dual Mode Suspension, which makes the Portofino a comfortable drive even over the most unforgiving B roads. Secondly, the new Electronic Power Steering means that in Comfort mode, the steering is beautifully light for city driving and yet increases in weight, sharpness and feedback when Sport mode is selected. Finally, the simplification of the Manettino steering wheel dial to just 3 modes makes the whole car much more approachable and usable in day-to-day scenarios. Overall the new Portofino offers all the thrills and sound of a convertible Ferrari with the practicality and everyday usability required for those trips to the Riviera.
