2021 Toyota Yaris GR (Circuit Pack)
Information
It’s easy to overlook the huge success Toyota have achieved in Motorsport over the years.
Many people (myself included) would most likely associate the Japanese manufacturer with globally mass-produced family cars and that wouldn’t be wrong, the Carolla is the single most sold model of car in the world. However, there is more to Toyota than simply “the car in front” being one.
Since its introduction to motorsport in the early 1970s, Toyota have competed in a number of motorsport classes including NASCAR, Indycar, Touring car and even Formula One, although their most notable success has been in WRC and most recently the WEC. In 1990 Carlos Sainz won the WRC Championship in the iconic Celica GT4 and in 1998 he came within two points of claiming Toyota’s second WRC title, this time in the 4WD Carolla.
Since 2015 all of Toyota's motorsport activities are handled by Gazoo Racing, and it’s under the “GR” Banner that Toyota have experienced incredible success with five consecutive wins from 2018 in the Le Mans 24 Hours, a race widely regarded as the pinnacle of competitive motorsport.
After seventeen years of absence, Toyota entered the 2017 World Rally Championship with Toyota Gazoo Racing and the Yaris WRC, the following year Ott Tänak and Sébastien Ogier rallied the Yaris to victory to claim Toyota’s fourth WRC crown, promoting the brand as the third most successful Manufacturer to grace the championship.
In order for a vehicle to be eligible to take part in FIA approved races such as the WRC, it has to be produced to a minimum number of units by its manufacturer in road going form. These models are known as “Homologation Specials” and for this reason the Yaris GR was born.
Since its launch in 2020 the Yaris GR has received widespread praise and accolades from the motoring world and in 2021 it was crowned “Performance car of the year” by AutoExpress.
EVO – “the modern homologation special at its very best”
Top Gear – ““The GR Yaris proves what we've long suspected: that a pukka road-going rally car is the best thing for a B-road”
