Mercedes-Benz were an early adopter of the luxury SUV with the M-class back in the late 90's and an early proponent of the performance variant too, with the ML55 AMG. Several generations and a name change later, the GLE53 AMG is the modern day distant relative and proof that the apple never falls far from the tree.

Despite over two decades passing since the ML55 hit the scene, the original checklist remains, an SUV with all the comfort and luxury you would expect from the three-pointed star whilst also fulfilling all the practical family needs and packing ample power to ensure the kids are never late for school.

The GLE 53 is powered by Mercedes 3.0 litre hybrid ‘EQ boost’ in-line six which produces 429BHP, an impressive number, and when you consider the naturally aspirated 5.4 Litre V8 of its distant predecessor boasted 342BHP it really does highlight how powertrain technology has developed over the last 20 years.

So, there’s certainly enough performance from the 53’s drivetrain to justify the AMG badging, and with the assistance of the hybrid components it’s responsive in a way AMG’s old V6 ‘43’ engine might not have been in a car such as this.
